When Should You Change Your Air Filter?
An air filter might seem small, but it plays a huge role in how well your HVAC system runs, and how healthy your indoor air feels.
At All-Pro Electrical & Air Conditioning, we often remind homeowners: one of the cheapest and easiest ways to extend the life of your HVAC system is to use high-quality air filters and replace them often.
Why Changing Your Air Filter Matters
1) Improves Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)
Your air filter’s job is to trap airborne particles like:
- Dust
- Pollen
- Mold spores
- Other debris
Over time, filters age and deteriorate. When that happens, they don’t trap new particles effectively—and they can even release debris back into your system.
2) Helps Reduce Energy Costs
Using a clean, high-quality air filter can improve airflow and system efficiency. In fact, it’s estimated that a clean, quality air filter can reduce air conditioner energy consumption by up to 16%.
3) Lowers the Risk of Costly Repairs
A clogged filter can force your system to work harder. That extra strain can lead to wear and tear that may eventually cause expensive issues.
What Happens When a Filter Gets Clogged?
When a filter becomes clogged, air often bypasses the filter and pushes dirt directly toward critical components, especially the evaporator coil.
That contamination reduces the coil’s ability to absorb heat, meaning your AC has to work harder to cool your home. The result?
- Unnecessary wear and tear
- Higher energy bills
- Reduced indoor air quality
High-Quality Filters Help, But MERV Isn’t Everything
Higher-quality filters generally trap more particles—especially helpful if you have:
- Allergies
- Asthma
- COPD (or other respiratory conditions)
You might see filters with a higher MERV rating, which can trap more particles—but a higher MERV rating is not a substitute for two key things:
- A properly fitting filter
- Regular replacement
Going too high on MERV can restrict airflow, which may actually damage your HVAC system.
How Often Should You Change Your Filter?
There isn’t one perfect schedule for everyone. How often you should clean or replace your filter depends on:
- Your environment (dust levels, pollen seasons, etc.)
- The type of filter you use
- Household conditions (pets, smoking, etc.)
Most residential air filters are not designed to be cleaned, they’re meant to be replaced.
You may need to replace your filter more often if:
- You smoke in your home
- You have long-haired pets
- You notice increased dust buildup or allergy flare-ups
Not Sure Which Filter Your System Needs?
Choosing the right filter involves balancing airflow, filtration quality, and your system’s requirements.
